Aldershot v Worcester City - Saturday 19th November 1983

Aldershot Town v Worcester City - 19/11/1983

After the excitement of the previous season's FA Cup exploits the fans were eager for more cup glory. Exemptions from the early rounds meant that only the tricky hurdle of Basingstoke Town had to be overcome before the First Round Proper was reached. A tense match at Basingstoke ended with the need for a replay and 1,919 turned up to see two goals for ace striker Paul Moss help Worcester to a 3-1 victory and this difficult away tie at Aldershot of Football League Division 4, by coincidence the same team City had played in the 1957-78 cup campaign. Many City fans travelled to the game in style on a special train hauled direct from Worcester by a class 47 diesel locomotive. 3,553 spectators witnessed an excellent game of football that was almost totally dominated by City. City took the lead mid-way through the first half with an unstoppable drive from Paul Moss and the same player then saw a header rebound off the crossbar. Aldershot gained a somewhat fortuitous equaliser but it was the City who came closest to winning the game late on when a string of good chances went begging including another occasion where the woodwork rescued the home team. The euphoric City fans had only two days to wait before Worcester duly dumped the league team out of the cup. Aldershot took the lead in the first half and held this until nearly half time, then Paul Moss dribbled the ball half the length of the ground and stroked the ball into the net giving the keeper no chance. He repeated the feat in the second half and could easily have had a hat-trick as Aldershot tamely capitulated.

City bowed out of the cup at Maidstone in the next round being on the receiving end of an awful display by the "home team" referee.
