Kettering Town v Worcester City - Wednesday 1st November 1978

Kettering Town v Worcester City - 1/11/1978

No City supporter who was at this game will ever forget the fantastic performance by a City team playing at the peak of their form. 2,422 spectators turned out to watch this game between Kettering, the then leaders, and an unbeaten City team who had scored 15 goals in the previous 10 days.

Kettering took the lead inside the first five minutes but City levelled almost as soon as the game restarted. City put together some fluent moves and should have been in front before a breakaway goal saw the Poppies in front again just before the interval only for City to equalise on the stroke of half time. Mid-way through the second half Kettering were awarded a hotly disputed free-kick and with the defence disorganised, Kettering re-took the lead. City were alight with rage and launched wave after wave of attacks towards their own supporters at the Rockingham Road end. City were unstoppable and scored three time in the last fifteen minutes to run out 5-3 winners. Many in the crowd felt the debt owed from 1968 had been at last been repaid. In the programme notes the editor recalls that game: "Whilst there is a possibility of a 1-0 win to Kettering, there is no chance that it will be credited to Barry Daldy who shoulder charged the City keeper over the line that day".
